Circana’s comprehensive weekly updates on the U.S. consumer packaged goods sector monitor the impact of macroeconomic factors, including tariffs, on volume, price, and supply, providing valuable insights to support critical business decisions.
Highlights from this week’s edition:
Retail food & beverage volume declined 0.6% in May, particularly Memorial Day weekend, as cool, rainy weather and continued low consumer sentiment weighed on demand. The slowdown spans most segments, with the sharpest drop in the latest week for key gathering of staples like alcohol, beverages, and ice cream. Despite May declines, retail F&B sales are expected to return to low growth (0.0-0.5%).
Average price growth remains stable with no observable impact from tariffs yet. High price growth in eggs, meat, and cocoa begins to stabilize due to bird flu and crop supply recovery, but there’s some acceleration in coffee.
In core non-food CPG, consumer spending remains soft with weakness concentrated primarily in more discretionary areas, such as select kitchen and home products.
Average price growth accelerated due to channel and product mix, but shelf prices remain largely unaffected by tariffs.
